Would life be better if dogs could talk? - my perspective
A lot of people think that one of the major drawbacks of having dogs is that they can't communicate with you. They have the obstacle of not being able to understand our languages, not being able to convey their feelings or moods to us. And this is a valid point. However, in my opinion, the fact that dogs can't communicate with us is what makes it so much better to be in their presence.
Dogs and humans are very different. Society has shaped and moulded humans in a certain way, so that when we look at each other or even at ourselves, the only things we can see are our faults and bad qualities. In today's world, we're harsh and quick to judge. We don't take a liking to anyone unless they look and behave like us. But none of these things matter to dogs. They don't look at our size, colour, race or gender. When you look into their eyes, all they see is what's within. The real you. And there's a profound kind of purity in that which makes me want to drown in that feeling forever.
If you look closely enough, you'll notice that the bond you have with your dog is very different from the bond you have with the people around you. For example, when I go down for a walk with people around me, I'm extremely conscious about how I might look and what they would think of me. But when I go down alone with Barfi, it's like I shed all of my insecurities. I run. I jump in puddles with him. I throw stones for him to fetch. I drag dried branches along with me and come home covered in mud and rain. What I'm trying to say, is that I'm happy around him. I don't have to worry about my clothes getting dirty, and I don't have to think about what judgments other people will make. Because when I'm with him, the rest of the world fades away, and no one's opinions matter but our own.
If dogs could talk, it would ruin the magical connection we have with them today. Those who are lucky enough to experience it know that it has the ability to change your perspective on life. When you realize the true purpose a dog has in your life, it'll break the shackles which painted your world in black and white, because dogs are the ones which teach you how to live. Oscar Wilde once said that 'to live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.' To exist is to live your life in constant stress, putting too much pressure on yourself until you finally crack beneath it all. To follow the same, dull routine day after day, to keep running in languid circles and never experience new things. When you learn to embrace your good qualities and your faults, to accept yourself for who you are, only then do you start to live. It takes time for other people's opinions to stop having an effect on you. But once you master the art of living the life on your own terms, then you can never go back.
Have you ever wondered why dogs have such short lives? Why they have to be taken away from us so soon? Well, the answer is simple. As humans, most of us take a whole lifetime to fully commit to one person, to bare our hearts to them and to be vulnerable to them in every single way. But dogs manage to pack the love we give in a full lifetime in just a few years. They manage to love you so fiercely and to look so perfectly within your soul, that the beautiful connection you have with them expires in a short but sweet time. Good things can't last forever. But even after they pass away, they leave us a gift. The secret to the life we have and the knowledge of how to really live it.
In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, 'To be yourself in a world that’s constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.' So before I end, I would like to remind everyone to be themselves, because that's the most important thing in the world. Those who have a problem with it don't matter, because the people who really care about you will love you for it even more.
